College football has another new term, DSA, or Designated Student Athletes. With the House ruling and grandfathering in players, teams are allowed to carry more than the 105-man roster limit. However, they must submit a DSA list to the NCAA by July 6th.
With this ruling and the creation of the DSA list, the NCAA has created a waiver for players put on the DSA list to be allowed to enter a special portal window from July 7th to August 5th. Once a player enters the portal he will have a protected status throughout his career. No matter where he goes, he will never count against a team’s 105-man roster limit.
Nebraska’s current roster is at 126 players, which means Nebraska can submit as many as 21 players that would not have made the roster had they been forced to get to 105. The DSA list brings up several new scenarios. Because these players are protected and will never count against the roster there is an advantage to having them. However, they become a valuable commodity in the portal as well.
It will be interesting to see how teams approach the DSA list. Look for Nebraska to submit a full list of 21 players if needed. If so, expect it to be the bottom of the roster, playes106 through 126. But the transfer portal becomes enticing for some players as they may not be a starter at Nebraska but possibly could be at an FCS school like South Dakota State.
Stay tuned Husker fans. It becomes more evident every day that a head coach needs to be more than a coach, he needs to be a great CEO as well. I’ll still stand behind Matt Rhule, he’s the right guy for Nebraska.
