April 12 Presser With Coach Rhule
News coming out of the Husker Spring Practice has been relatively low key in comparison to previous seasons in Lincoln. That isn’t necessarily a bad thing, just look at the news coming out of Knoxville, TN about their unfortunate situation with NIL and their $8 Million QB. For Nebraska the biggest news so far has been the separation between the Cornhuskers and Hardley Gilmore for what is mostly unknown reasons.
On Saturday April 12th Head Coach Matt Rhule held a Spring Training Camp presser, here is a breakdown of what he had to say:
– The team practiced indoor early on during camp and eventually moved into the stadium with a goal of getting each group at least 30 reps
– So far Nebraska has come out of training camp healthy
– Rhule is looking forward to seeing the pass rush develop, saying that he thinks the O-Line is blocking very well. But is happy with where the D-Line is at currently
– Rhule appreciates what the Defensive coaching staff is doing right now with the level of instruction being very high
– Nebraska is still waiting on the house settlement so they can figure out what the roster is going to look like
– Smaller colleges are coming to the Husker practices to observe how it is done as well as to look at some of the potential players who do not make the final roster
– Rhule wants to be able to take walk-ons every year but is not sure if that is going to be possible until the house settlement is done
– Every player on the roster was told in December where they stood on the 105 man roster
– The house settlement is still on-going and nothing is set in stone
– When asked about the scrimmage Rhule stated that “It was hard to watch a scrimmage in an empty 90,000 seat stadium”
– The biggest thing Rhule noticed was that the Huskers looked very physical and that there does not seem to be a big drop off from each player at certain positions
– The team is having a good understanding of situational drills this spring
– Elijah Pritchette was mentioned by the coach as having all the talent in the world and that he is willing and eager by putting in the work he needs to do to improve
– Tyler Knaack was mentioned as having a great spring and is a great representative for the program
– Grant Seagren is big time player in Rhules mind and needs to shed the idea that he is a walk-on in his own mind
– Nebraska has good versatility on the offensive line at the moment
– When asked about Tennessee’s situation with their QB Rhule said that he tries not to get involved in the story. Noting that he does not fault players for leaving, but wants them to make sure they are walking into the right situation. For Rhule there are two groups, the guys who want to play but will not, and the section of guys who are good enough to play at Nebraska. And if those guys good enough to play, if they are NFL caliber talent, then they will grow and improve at Nebraska.
– At a place like Nebraska Rhule noted that you should only leave if you are not going to play
– Some teams are recruiting players from other teams to be strictly backups, sighting that CFP caliber teams recognize that they are gonna have to play 16 games and need more depth
– Rhule said that Nebraska could start 6 different guys at Corner, and 4 different guys at Safety. The underclassmen are developing fairly quickly
– Rhule wants guys in the program to get bigger, faster, and stronger. As well as master their mindset for future life
Overall today Rhule spoke to the media for almost 19 minutes. There was nothing ground breaking about today’s press conference, no major announcements of any kind. From my perspective it just kind of seems as though Spring camp is moving along as it should and the staff is handling its business as needed. Us as fans do not always need to know every single detail of what is going on.
