I was 10 years old when Nebraska won their first National Championship. I was 23 when the two-point conversion failed in Miami. I was 34 when Tom Osborne won his first National Championship. And I was 49 when Texas put one more second back on the clock. I’ve been a Cornhusker fan all my life. And at 64 I’m excited to write about Nebraska football. Good things are about to happen.
In my last ‘Getting to 105’ I stated it was the last post on players, and I’d move on to the coaching staff. However, I forgot special teams, so today’s ‘105’ is Special Teams. If you’ve been following along, then you know I established my 105 by first determining how many players are needed at each position. On special teams, I decided on 2 place kickers, 2 punters, and 1 long snapper, for a total of (5). However, that could change with the evaluation of personnel. Sometimes your place kickers and punters can be backups for one another if needed.…
Whether Husker football fans are fully aware of it or not, the clock has started ticking on head coach Matt Rhule’s tenure at Nebraska. Winter conditioning has started, meaning the 2025 football season is underway. Since Rhule’s arrival at Nebraska fans and media have been pointing towards this season. As the head man, every program Rhule has led made a significant leap in its third year. After going 5-7 in his first year and 7-6 in his second, it’s easy for Husker fans to say anything short of nine wins will be seen as a failure. Eight wins will be…
This is the final player installment of ‘Getting to 105’. I established my 105 by first determining how many players are needed at each position. On offense, I decided on the following, 20 offensive linemen, 6 tight ends, 13 wide receivers, 5 quarterbacks, and 6 running backs for a total of (50). The addition of Glenn Thomas as the quarterback coach last season helped in the development of Dylan Raiola and the rest of the quarterbacks. But nothing will help this room more than Dana Holgorsen as the offensive coordinator. The four games we witnessed last season showed that simplifying…
Yesterday during HuskerOnline’s Red Sea Scrolls chat someone asked the question, “Is EJ Barthel coming back?” Steve Sipple replied. “He gone.” Of course, a few minutes later Sipple found out Barthel had signed a new contract for another two years and gotten a pay raise. I felt for Sipple. Granted he has more inside information than I do, but when you are on the outside looking in as we are, all you can do is wet your finger, hold it in the air and try to gauge which way the wind is blowing. My take was like Sipple’s. I expected…
This is the seventh installment of ‘Getting to 105’ and the fourth on offense. I established my 105 by first determining how many players are needed at each position. On offense, I decided on the following, 20 offensive linemen, 6 tight ends, 13 wide receivers, 5 quarterbacks, and 6 running backs for a total of (50). Upon Matt Rhule’s arrival he suggested Nebraska would return to using a fullback and even had a fullback camp during recruiting. In the initial spring game, the first play from scrimmage was a fullback run by Janiran Bonner. For Husker fans it brought back…
This is the sixth installment of ‘Getting to 105’ and the third on offense. I established my 105 by first determining how many players are needed at each position. On offense, I decided on the following, 20 offensive linemen, 6 tight ends, 13 wide receivers, 5 quarterbacks, and 6 running backs for a total of (50). My numbers will be different from what we’ll see on opening day, but they are a starting point. The wide receiver position is one of those where my number of 13 could be 12 or 15, depending upon where Nebraska feels the need. When…
It’s partly cloudy, the temperature is a pleasant 63 degrees. If you didn’t know better, you could mistake it for fall. The stadium is three quarters full, and the stands are a sea of red. There are more young faces than normal, all excited to be in Memorial Stadium for the first time. Some have their faces painted, others are wearing corn heads. They giggle and point at Herbie Husker and Little Red as they chase one another down the sideline. Some point at Dyaln Raiola and then makes sure all their family sees they are wearing his number 15…
This is the fifth installment of ‘Getting to 105’. In the last installment I covered the offensive line. If you have been reading the earlier articles, then you know I established my 105 by first determining how many players are needed at each position. On offense, I decided on the following, 20 offensive linemen, 6 tight ends, 13 wide receivers, 5 quarterbacks, and 6 running backs for a total of (50). Matt Rhule suggested in his winter press conference that like the NFL’s 53 man roster they would start with 57. There are some slight differences, such as at quarterback…
There is a reason I’ve never been to Las Vegas and do not have a Fan-Dual account. In my last article I said I would put my money on Matt Rhule hiring Tyler Brown of the Philadelphia Eagles as Nebraska’s next special teams coordinator. As we all know now, I would have lost. Rhule surprised me and most Husker fans by hiring the guy we’ve all been clamoring for since Rhule announced special teams needed a complete overall. Mike Ekeler’s name was the first to be heard from Husker Nation when new blood was suggested. And with good reason. I…
Saturday morning Matt Rhule had his offseason press conference. It’s the first time he has met with the media since the Pinstripe Bowl. Questions were abundant and Rhule addressed several topics, including the continued search for a special team coordinator, the spring game, or the lack thereof, and working toward the 105-man roster. Let me start by saying, since Rhule’s arrival I have fully bought in to his message and vision for Nebraska. I’ve said it multiple times, he is the right guy for the Nebraska job. That hasn’t changed. But I found Saturday’s press conference a mixed bag of…
