I was 10 years old when Nebraska won their first National Championship. I was 23 when the two-point conversion failed in Miami. I was 34 when Tom Osborne won his first National Championship. And I was 49 when Texas put one more second back on the clock. I’ve been a Cornhusker fan all my life. And at 64 I’m excited to write about Nebraska football. Good things are about to happen.

Greg Schiano, who is in his second stint as head coach at Rutgers, is known for his no-nonsense approach and hard-hitting teams. They approach the game with a run oriented, ball control, clock control game, keeping it close and wearing you out until the end. The Scarlet Knights finished 7-6 last season with a bowl win over Miami and are 4-0 this season. Offensively, the Knights are led by 6’3’ 215lb QB Athan Kaliakmanis. The two-year starter for Minnesota transferred to Rutgers this spring. In twelve games last season Kaliakmanis completed 53.1% of his passes for 1,838 yards, 14 TD’s…

Nebraska played two halves of football against Purdue Saturday, both literally and figuratively. The first half was reminiscent of the melt downs we’ve seen before at Ross Ade Stadium. The second half however, looked like what we had hoped to see going in. Nebraska continues to work towards something they have yet to do this season, play four full quarters of football. In the first three games we wrote it off to inferior opponents, building an identity, and jumping out to early leads. But with the beginning of B1G play, Illinois showed Nebraska who they really were. What we saw…

Much has been said about Nebraska’s loss to Illinois. I laid the loss at the feet of the Blackshirts. But looking back, maybe I was wrong. Listening to the coaches this week and to former players, they didn’t think the defense played that poorly. It was a team loss, with the offense missing opportunities to take control and the special teams playing their part once again. But I was disappointed because I didn’t feel the Blackshirts brought enough intensity. Illinois looked more physical and appeared hungrier. People point out the defense held Illinois to three points for a long period…

Nebraska didn’t get it done, more than that, they didn’t show up. This team, this staff and us as fans, were humbled. And looking back, we probably deserved that. We got ahead of ourselves. We got caught up in the, “We are different now because we have Dylan Raiola.” We all believed he alone was going to take us to new heights. That all his teammates had to do, and us as fans, was to follow. It was easy to get caught up, Raiola is a super talent. And if I had to hand out a best game ball for…

Friday night, Memorial Stadium, Lincoln Nebraska, two teams in the BIG 10 conference will meet to determine who is for real. Illinois Nebraska, Nebraska Illinois. Three games into the season, these two teams are mirror images of each other. Looking at talent and stats, no one has a clear advantage. The only real question is at place kicker. Nebraska hasn’t shown they can be consistent and make winning kicks if needed. Illinois, on the other hand, has two kickers who have made kicks of over 50 yards. Nebraska’s only advantage, they play at home. And even then, unless the crowd…

I’m excited to say Nebraska is 3-0 to start the season. But not all fans thought they would be 3-0. Several were worried about Colorado. The worry was for nothing, Matt Rhule had the Huskers ready, and they won in a convincing fashion. After seeing how the Huskers handled Colorado, Northern Iowa was counted as a win before the game was even played. And several fans started talking about being 7-0 when going to Ohio State. Personally, I’m somewhere in the middle on that thought. Do I think 7-0 is a possibility? Yes – but ask me if I think…

The University of Northern Iowa is coming to town, and people are already talking about this being another UTEP game, with everybody on Nebraska’s sideline getting a chance to play. I hate being a buzz kill, and maybe it’s okay for the fans to think that way, but I sure hope the Huskers haven’t already counted this as a win. While they should be confident and set a goal of getting everyone on the field, a lack of respect will get them in trouble. Just ask Notre Dame. Besides, from an offensive and special teams’ standpoint, I didn’t see anything…

Well, our Huskers got it done, they beat Colorado. If you were a Nebraska fan, this was a great win. With it being a night game and nationally televised, Memorial Stadium was rocking with an electric atmosphere. I’ve heard several people say it was the loudest game they’ve ever been to. Even Colorado wide receiver Travis Hunter said the fans made a difference, saying it was so loud he had trouble even thinking. Good on Husker fans. This was the game old fans like me have been waiting for. This team is as close to the Husker teams of the…

Before we look ahead, we need to look back. Nebraska winning the opening game of the season got that 0-1 monkey off their back. And the best part, the win came in a dominating fashion. People saw the results of what this kind of win means. 108 different players got on the field and were rewarded for all their hard work. Yes, they were always part of the team, but now they’ve faced the fire. Whatever team building that occurred in the past is now galvanized, a bond that will never be broken. Good on Matt Rhule for recognizing the…

Oh yes…. yes, it is…. It’s a new day in Nebraska football. But let me guess, you’re a doubter. How is today different from yesterday? Well, for one, it’s been 1,828 days since Nebraska fans crawled out of bed with an opening day win. Stop and consider that number, 1,828. What if someone had stopped you on the street in the middle of football season in 1992 and said, “I believe there will come a day when Nebraska goes 1,828 days without an opening day win.” First, you would have wanted to slap them for even thinking such a thing.…
