The Nebraska Huskers had media availability with select coaches on 4 Mar 25, and one of the coaches that spoke to the media was newly hired special teams coach Mike Ekeler. Ekeler comes from Tennessee after having one of the best special teams units in the country, and takes over arguably one of the worst units in the country. He spoke very highly of Matt Rhule. He said Rhule was one of the best leaders he has ever been around. He explained that when Rhule talks in meetings, he is captivated and takes lots of notes. He remarked that…

Phil Snow, associate head coach and longtime college of Matt Rhule spoke with the media today. It is the first time since he was hired that the media was able to ask him questions and his interview revealed a lot about why he came here and what the direction of the team is in the offseason. To start with, Snow mentioned he was initially offered the job with Rhule when Rhule initially took over the Huskers. Snow at the time declined, citing his age was a factor in keeping up with the demands of recruiting and other facets. With…

News broke early on Friday that Nebraska had cancelled its home and home series with Tennessee for 2026 and 2027. Tennessee’s athletic director even took to social media to voice his disappointment in Nebraska. And of course, social media was set ablaze with people saying Nebraska backed out of a challenge and it was a bad look. So, what’s the story behind all of this? It’s actually pretty simple. Nebraska was previously supposed to start this home and home with Tennessee a few years back, but Tennessee asked Nebraska to reschedule it so they could play Virginia Tech at…

E.J. Bathel, the running backs coach for Nebraska football, received a 2-year contract extension this month. His new contract will keep him here through the 2027 season. The new contract increases his salary from $293,550 a year to $450,000 a year. A significant pay bump. When you compare Barthel’s new contract to other power four running backs coaches, his salary is on the upper end of the average. However, some programs pay quite a bit more, both Texas and Ohio State pay their position coaches north of $500,000 a year, for example. This news came as a…

With the combine just weeks away (24 February to 3 March) invites are sent out and we now know who will represent Nebraska in Indianapolis. Receiving invites were WR Isaiah Neyor, TE Thomas Fidone, DT Ty Robinson, and DB Tommi Hill. Noticeably absent from this list is DT Nash Hutmacher, who was also a standout on the defensive line with Robinson. Hutmacher is projected to be a later round pick, and not going to the combine wont necessarily stop that at. Hutmacher participated in the East-West Shrine Bowl recently, are scouts praised his ability to eat up the…

Admittedly I’m writing this with 9 minutes left in the big game. The score is 37-6, Eagles. And don’t look now but the Chiefs just turned over the ball – yet again. So, I feel safe in saying even with Mahomes as the losing team’s quarterback, that this game is over. Cam Jurgens, the starting center for the Eagles, who took over the role with big shoes to fill for Jason Kelce, has his roots in Nebraska football as most fans will recall. Jurgens time at Nebraska was interesting, as he was there during a tumultuous time, under Scott…

Matt Rhule had to pivot on some of his beliefs this offseason, with respect to roster management. His philosophy coming in (and the university’s) was to be the kind of program that develops talent over taking major stars. Well, college football has changed, and Rhule has quickly identified that he will have to mix that strategy with an infusion of talent from the transfer portal. In the day and age of NIL money and revenue sharing, in order to compete with the best, you essentially have to identify free agent talent and buy it. So, Rhule embraced that.…

The Nebraska spring game is something almost every Husker Football fan looks forward too come April/May. In fact, the game (which is really a glorified scrimmage) usually nearly sells out Memorial Stadium every year. This week Nebraska AD Troy Dannen mentioned that a spring game, as we know it, is unlikely to happen. Killing a tradition like this? Some would demand to know why – especially with the revenue it brings in (about 1 million annually). It turns out most of this is out of Dannen’s hands. Changes over the last couple years to college football are coming…

With the 2024 season firmly in the books, many are now looking ahead to what is in store for 2025. Nebraska added some shiny new toys in its receiver room in Dane Key, and Nyziah Hunter. It will also return star Jacory Barney Jr, who played as a true freshman in 2024. Barney was recently recognized for having the most targets without a drop in 2024, by PFF, which was 76. In total in 2024, Barney had 55 receptions for 447 yards, but not receiving touchdowns. He did rush for 3 touchdowns in 2024. In total Barney locked…

The transfer portal officially opened on 9 December, and now players are expected to enter in droves around the country. The transfer portal is usually ripe with talent for the school in need, but this year may have more to offer due to looming roster limits. Nebraska lost its defensive coordinator and defensive line coach last week, and with it multiple starters from the Huskers entered the transfer portal. Key losses at linebacker and defensive line need to be addressed. With that in mind, I figured Head Coach Matt Rhule would announce the defensive coordinator hire over the weekend.…
