Head coach Matt Rhule announced that Nebraska defensive backs coach John Butler will be the defensive coordinator in the bowl game. Butler will also be a candidate to fill the position permanently. He was brought in by Rhule to potentially take over if needed.
“That’s why I brought John in,” Rhule said at Wednesday’s media availability. “He’s been a defensive coordinator before.”
Rhule doesn’t want the scheme on defense to change. Expect the 3-3-5, with rotating a lot of players to remain. Butler was the defensive coordinator for Penn State in 2013. He most recently was the defensive backs coach for the Buffalo Bills from 2018-2023.
“I don’t want to switch to anything different,” Rhule said. “I like this defense.”
