A huge blow for Nebraska. Defensive coordinator Tony White is the front-runner to accept the same position at Florida State. White led the Huskers to top 20 national defenses each season during his two-year stint in Lincoln.
Defensive line coach Terrance Knighton is expected to go with White as well.
What now?
Head coach Matt Rhule will have to act quickly, hoping to keep his recruiting class intact, featuring four-star edge Dawson Merritt. Phil Snow seems to be a viable option. Snow was the defensive coordinator for Rhule at Temple, Baylor and Carolina.
Maybe Rhule will give a call to former Wisconsin defensive coordinator Jim Leonhard. Leonhard led one of the better defenses in the country when he was on the Badgers’ staff. He currently is the defensive backs coach for the Denver Broncos. The Huskers have the funds to hire a big name. Rhule also might consider promoting someone in-house. The first name that comes to mind is linebackers coach Rob Dvoracek.
Welcome to bowl season Husker Nation, the fireworks have already started.
