Under the bright and flashing lights of Las Vegas, Nebraska opened with promise against the No. 15-ranked Utah Utes but ultimately fell 44-22 at Allegiant Stadium. Nebraska seized early momentum with an eight-play, 82-yard touchdown drive on their opening possession, followed by a 12-play, 75-yard march that built a 14-7 lead after the first quarter. Freshman running back Mekhi Nelson impressed in his first career start, rushing for 88 yards and a 38-yard touchdown, while quarterback TJ Lateef managed the offense effectively in the early going. Nebraska looked like they were going to hang with Utah and make a statement. That’s when Utah played their hand.
The game shifted decisively as Utah quarterback Devon Dampier took over. Dampier delivered a standout performance, accounting for more than 450 total yards—310 passing with two touchdowns and 148 rushing with three scores. The Utes responded to Nebraska’s early scores by tying the game repeatedly before pulling ahead with efficient drives, including a field goal and multiple touchdowns to enter halftime up 24-14. Utah’s offense maintained its rhythm in the second half, pushing the lead to 38-14 before the Huskers added a late touchdown.
Utah outgained Nebraska 535-343 in total yards en route to an 11-2 finish, while the Cornhuskers closed their season at 7-6. Dampier’s five total touchdowns overwhelmed Nebraska’s defense, and despite a late rushing score and two-point conversion from Lateef, the Huskers could not overcome the early momentum loss against a ranked opponent in the Las Vegas spotlight.
