Nebraska has had another 2026 recruit decommit. This time it is QB Dayton Raiola. Over the last 30 years Husker fans have been surprised or shocked time after time. From retiring, to firings, to hirings, and players coming or going. There is nothing left for Husker fans to be surprised by. With this news Husker fans are buzzing with speculation. To most, it’s unimaginable Dayton’s decommitment doesn’t have something to do with his brother Dylan Raiola or his uncle Donavan Raiola. But what fans need to remember is, Matt Rhule is still the head coach and Nebraska now has a General Manger.
I wrote just last week that Nebraska was set for the future at the quarterback position. But only if Pat Stewart could come up with the money to retain current players Dylan Raiola and TJ Lateef, along with 2026 commit Dayton Raiola, and 2027 commit Trae Taylor. Matt Rhule may have said money is no longer an issue, but where that money is spent is. Now we know who the odd man out may be.
The news shouldn’t be especially shocking considering HC Matt Rhule just visited Dayton Friday night in Buford. Dayton has been solid in his commitment to Nebraska from the very start, so, the visit was unusual. There was no reason for Rhule to worry about Raiola’s commitment, which means the visit was about other things. And you can also bet the topic wasn’t out of the blue. This has been developing since July. It’s a given there were several things discussed during the visit and none should be surprising to Husker fans. You can bet it started with his brother Dylan and went to current QB TJ Lateef and 2027 QB commit Trae Taylor. And from there it went to the main topic, what Pat Stewart’s assessment of Dayton’s NIL money might be.
Dayton committed early because Nebraska has always been his choice, not the other way around. And because of that he was never heavily recruited. In fact, he only had two other offers, Appalachian State and Charlotte. Perhaps with that being the case Stewart based Dayton’s NIL value on that. If so, I’m sure it was disappointing compared to what Dylan is being paid.
It all fits with what Dayton’s father Dominic Raiola had to say. “I want to bet on ourselves, and Dayton just wants to make sure of a fit.”
Typically, your QB commit is heavily involved in peer recruiting. That hasn’t been the case with Dayton Raiola. Most of the peer recruitment has been done by Trae Taylor and several of the guys coming in have a better relationship with Taylor than Dayton.
With the early signing date less than a month away, most if not all teams already have their 2026 QB commit nailed down. With Dominic’s comment and the fact signing is so close, it’s easy to think Dayton has recently gotten a much better offer. Dayton is an early enrollee and had planned on participating in Nebraska’s bowl practices. If he goes elsewhere that could still be the case with another team.
Matt Rhule doesn’t burn bridges, but with his reputation for being transparent, I’m sure he was up front with Dayton and told him Nebraska was prepared to do whatever it took to retain Lateef and that Taylor, who is already receiving NIL money, is the future. If Dayton came to Nebraska he would be developed and be well coached, but he probably wouldn’t see a great deal of playing time. His dream is to play at the next level, and you don’t get to the next level without playing experience, which would be lacking if he were a Husker.
With Dayton’s announcement fans shouldn’t jump to conclusions that Nebraska has another 2026 QB in their sights. There is a belief out there that Jett Thomalla will now get an offer from the Huskers. But there has never been any indication Thomalla was ever interested in being a Husker. And in all truthfulness, Nebraska is set at QB and has needs at other positions.
While Husker fans absorb the news of the day, they’ll quickly move on to Penn State. We’ve always known the 2026 class was going to be small anyway, and for every decommitment from this class, the transfer portal looms larger.
GO BIG REG!!
