Nebraska athletics is living out the saying, “In Our Grit, Our Glory,” in nearly every sport. It’s been a week of grit-filled performances all across the board, from standing up after being knocked down from a 106-mph hit to the face to coming back from being down 20 points at the half. Nebraska is proving to opponents across all sports that it will take your best performance and then some to take down a Cornhusker.
The men’s basketball team was down 21-41 against Northwestern, but after the death of a whiteboard, thanks to Coach Hoiberg during halftime, the Cornhuskers would storm back with a 47-28 run to win 68-64. Williams and Gary would combine for 38 points and finish 15/17 from the free-throw line. With this win, Nebraska’s hopes to make the NCAA tournament are still alive, but the Cornhuskers will need to finish the year strong and win at least one game in the Big Ten tournament to secure their place in the tourney.
Nebraska softball hasn’t had to worry about late-game comebacks, as the softball team had five consecutive run-rule wins and outscored opponents 69 to 9 during those games. In the game against Northern Colorado, Jordy Bahl would throw her first no-hitter as a Cornhusker, making it the 41st no-hitter in program history. Bahl’s performance earned her NFCA Player of the Week and Big Ten Co-Pitcher of the Week honors.
Nebraska’s baseball team went into their game against No. 16 Vanderbilt with one goal: Win for Greg Shape. In a game only Sharpe himself could write, Nebraska would go on to beat Vanderbilt 6-4, but it wasn’t an easy victory by any means. During the 8th inning, pitcher Tucker Timmerman would take a 106-mph ball to the face, causing the ball to ricochet off into foul territory. First baseman Case Sanderson tracked down the ball and made a heads-up tag to get the final out, ending the inning. Closer Luke Broderick would later enter the game and finish off Vanderbilt.
Finally, to the mats of Nebraska Wrestling. In their final home dual of the season, the Huskers would embarrass No. 21 Indiana, 39-2. Nebraska would win at every weight besides the final match of the heavyweights. Nebraska senior Caleb Smith (125 lb) would earn his 100th career victory after beating Indiana’s Jacob Moran with a score of 2-0. Nebraska finishes the season 6-1 at the Devaney Center, improving to 10-3 (5-2 Big Ten). The regular season for Nebraska Wrestling ends on February 23rd, when they will face Purdue.
