With the 2024 season firmly in the books, many are now looking ahead to what is in store for 2025. Nebraska added some shiny new toys in its receiver room in Dane Key, and Nyziah Hunter. It will also return star Jacory Barney Jr, who played as a true freshman in 2024.
Barney was recently recognized for having the most targets without a drop in 2024, by PFF, which was 76. In total in 2024, Barney had 55 receptions for 447 yards, but not receiving touchdowns. He did rush for 3 touchdowns in 2024. In total Barney locked in another 130 rushing yards.
Barney’s best game came against Wisconsin, a game where the offense shined under new offensive coordinator Dana Holgorson as a whole. Barney had 9 receptions for 85 yards.
Barneys average receptions was only 8.1 yards, as he was consistently used in jet sweeps and quick screens to take advantage of his speed on the outside. Barney, who played as a true freshman, was undersized in 2024, but he could take a hit and get right up displaying a toughness that makes Husker fans proud.
Barney will likely fill a slot position in 2025, which is perfect for his slightly smaller frame compared to Hunter and Key who will likely be outside receivers. Look for Barney to continue to be a gadget player as well, and he may rush for similar yards next year, as the Huskers like to use him in end arounds.
Nebraska’s receiver room should be something to keep an eye on going through the spring and fall, as its got (on paper) talent that should lead to success.
