Westside wide receiver Maurice Purify II has signed a late national letter of intent with the Nebraska Cornhuskers, capping a whirlwind recruitment process and continuing a proud family legacy in Lincoln. The 6-foot-4, 171-pound Purify II received the offer while driving home from school on Monday and didn’t hesitate to accept. “I was literally just driving home from school, and I got the call. They told me they wanted to offer me a full ride, and it didn’t take much for me to accept it. Nebraska is home right there. It’s in my backyard.”
Purify II’s father, Maurice Purify, was a standout wide receiver for the Huskers under head coach Bill Callahan in 2006 and 2007 before going on to play in the NFL. The younger Purify made it clear that the opportunity to follow in his father’s footsteps carries special meaning. “The first person that called me after I committed was my dad,” he said. “My dad playing at Nebraska and then getting the opportunity to play for Nebraska is a big deal. That’s a legacy. I will be trying to be better than him. That’s definitely a goal.” The signing comes after a challenging few months on the recruiting trail. Purify II decommitted from Washington State on September 30. Since then, he navigated a series of near-misses as programs dealt with roster fluctuations and late changes.
On the field, Purify II made his mark as a big-play threat for Omaha Westside. In his most recent high school season, he recorded 41 receptions for 589 yards (14.4 yards per catch) and 10 touchdowns. His athleticism extends well beyond the football field. Purify II is the top long jumper in the state of Nebraska, recently clearing 24 feet on multiple attempts. He enters the upcoming Metro Meet feeling sharp, despite scratching some massive jumps in recent meets at Lincoln High and Gretna.
The Cornhuskers now have a tall, speedy wide receiver with proven production, elite track pedigree, and deep familial roots in the program. As Purify II steps onto the field in Lincoln, he’ll be chasing touchdowns while chasing something even bigger: living up to and surpassing the legacy his father left behind.
