Nebraska Huskers’ recruiting efforts have struck gold with the recent commitment flip of Dawson Merritt from Alabama to Nebraska. Originally pledged to the Crimson Tide in June, Merritt, an On3 four-star EDGE rusher from Overland Park, Kansas, had become a significant target for the Huskers. Standing at 6’3″ and weighing 215 pounds, Merritt represents a key addition to Nebraska’s 2025 recruiting class.
The journey to Merritt’s flip reflects Nebraska head coach Matt Rhule’s persistence and strategic approach. Nebraska first welcomed Merritt for two visits in April, including an official visit during their spring game, laying the groundwork for a strong connection. However, it wasn’t until Merritt’s visit in September, when he watched Nebraska’s game against Colorado, that he started to seriously reconsider his commitment. Rhule’s continued interest, including attending Merritt’s game during Nebraska’s bye week, helped sway the prospect to ultimately choose the Huskers.
Merritt joins other top-ranked Nebraska recruits, such as linebacker Christian Jones from Omaha’s Westside High School and Pierce Mooberry from Millard North. Merritt’s skill set and projected versatility on the field make him a natural fit for Nebraska’s defensive vision, bolstering Rhule’s promise of building a competitive, resilient team in the Big Ten.
This commitment showcases Nebraska’s growing appeal and recruiting strength, especially as they work to secure further commitments before National Letter of Intent day in December.
