Reports indicate that Nebraska may have CharMar (Marty) Brown, a running back from North Dakota State making a visit Thursday. However, the visit hasn’t been finalized, and with his visiting Miami Monday, it could be a moot point. Rumor has it, Maimi is ready to sign him now.
Brown, an Omaha Nebraska native who played at Creighton Prep had a breakout season as a redshirt freshman at NDS. The 5’11” 218 pound back rushed for 1,181 yards and 15 touchdowns last season. He rushed for 100 yards or more in four games and won the Jerry Rice Award and was named the Missouri Valley Conference newcomer of the Year as well as Freshman of the Year.
Nebraska looked at Brown coming out of high school, but he was only offered scholarships from the MAC Conference and FCS schools. Now he is being pursued by schools like Nebraska, Miami, Indiana, and California. Currently Nebraska and Miami are viewed as the favorites. Miami only has four running backs on scholarships, while Nebraska has depth, but little experience.
Schools are eager to sign Brown as he was third in the MVC among all running backs with a PFF offensive grade of (90.8) and a rushing grade of (89.5). His offensive grade was 11th among all Division-I running backs.
Whether Nebraska can land Brown or not may come down to something Matt Rhule said last week, “You know, desperate teams always set the market, Let me say that one more time. In rev share all this, desperate teams set the market.”
Several media members have discussed Nebraska’s activity in the portal before it’s opening. Most determined that if they pursued anyone, it would perhaps be a running back, a wide receiver or a defensive lineman. Matt Rhule has stated that he likes this team. But pursuing someone at any of those three positions would be an indicator he feels the room needs improved upon or requires additional depth.
We’ll soon learn how much Rhule likes this team. That, or who is the more desperate, Miami or Nebraska.
