Nebraska is set to make the final key addition to their defensive coaching staff, hiring Corey Brown as the new defensive line coach. Coach Brown comes from Miami University (Ohio), where he has spent recent seasons developing a productive defensive front. This hire reunites Brown with Nebraska’s new defensive coordinator, Rob Aurich, as the two previously worked together at South Dakota.
A native of Houston, Texas, Brown brings a wealth of experience in the trenches, with a proven track record of generating sacks, developing all-conference talent, and producing NFL-caliber players. His coaching career spans nearly 20 years, with a focus on the defensive line across various levels of college football.
Brown played college football at the University of Iowa, where he was a defensive tackle from 1995 to 1999. As a senior in 1999, he started all 11 games and earned the team’s defensive hustle award. Notably, he faced Nebraska during his playing days, recording two tackles and forcing a fumble in a 1999 matchup. After college, Brown competed professionally for five years with the Quad City Steamwheelers in the Arena Football League 2 (AFL2), contributing to back-to-back championships.
His coaching journey began in 2006 at North Iowa Area Community College, where he served as defensive line and strength & conditioning coach. From 2008 to 2011, he held similar roles at Iowa Western Community College, helping six players earn FBS scholarships, including one All-American and eight all-region/all-conference honorees.
Brown gained national exposure as a defensive graduate assistant at Notre Dame from 2012 to 2013. He was part of a staff that led the Fighting Irish to a 12-0 regular season and the BCS National Championship Game. That defense allowed just four rushing touchdowns all year and held eight opponents under 100 rushing yards. Brown worked directly with standout players like defensive end Stephon Tuitt and defensive tackle Louis Nix, who were drafted in the 2nd and 3rd rounds of the NFL Draft.
He then joined Miami University (Ohio) for his first stint as defensive line coach from 2014 to 2018 under head coach Chuck Martin. During that period, the RedHawks amassed 89 sacks, produced four All-MAC players, and helped defensive tackle JT Jones secure a free-agent deal with the Atlanta Falcons. One highlight was a school-record eight sacks in a single game against Eastern Michigan.
After Miami, Brown coached the defensive line at Rutgers in 2018 and 2019, mentoring six academic All-Big Ten players. In 2019, senior Wil Previlon earned honorable mention All-Big Ten honors, was named Rutgers’ defensive MVP, and signed as a free agent with the Green Bay Packers.
Coach Brown had a brief stop at Division III Cornell College in 2020 before moving to South Dakota, where the Coyotes recorded 52 sacks over two seasons under his guidance. This period overlapped with Aurich, who served as special teams coordinator and inside linebackers coach.
In 2023, Brown returned to Miami (Ohio) for a second stint as defensive line coach. In his most recent season, the RedHawks ranked third in the Mid-American Conference in scoring defense (21.7 points per game), total defense (316.7 yards per game), rushing defense (134.21 ypg), and pass defense (182.6 ypg). They also forced 20 turnovers and tallied 38 sacks despite several new starters along the front. Over his recent three seasons at Miami, the team generated strong sack production, with reports highlighting at least 106 total sacks (61.5 attributed to the defensive line) and a top-20 sack percentage in FBS for three straight years, including an 8.44% rate in 2025 (15th nationally).
This hire represents a step back up to the Big Ten for Brown, bringing his expertise in player development, run-stopping, and pass-rush production to Lincoln. With connections to Aurich and prior Power conference experience at Rutgers and Notre Dame, Brown’s arrival completes what appears to be the final key piece of Nebraska’s revamped defensive staff under head coach Matt Rhule.
