Earlier today, Shakopee High School defensive lineman Nehemiah Ombati announced his commitment to the University of Nebraska, choosing the Cornhuskers over finalists Missouri and Michigan State. The 6-3, 275-pound interior defensive lineman becomes the 16th member of Nebraska’s 2027 recruiting class and its eighth blue-chip prospect. Widely regarded as the top player in the state of Minnesota and one of the nation’s top interior defensive linemen, Ombati gives the Huskers a significant boost to their defensive front as they continue to build much-needed depth under first-year defensive line coach Corey Brown.
Ombati’s commitment caps a crazy final stretch of his recruitment. Once holding offers from 16 Division I programs, he trimmed his list to a final three: Nebraska, Missouri, and Michigan State. Missouri hosted him for an official visit over Memorial Day weekend, but the Minnesota native departed Columbia without committing. Nebraska, which offered him back in January, scheduled Ombati for an official visit for the June 5 weekend as part of a loaded recruiting event that brought 15 official visitors to Lincoln.
The Huskers clearly made the most of their opportunity. As just three days after leaving Lincoln, Ombati decided to become a Cornhusker. The timing could hardly be better for a Nebraska program that added only one interior defensive lineman in the 2026 cycle and is aggressively restocking the position for the future.
Ombati joins a growing group of defensive linemen already in the 2027 class, including three-star prospects Jayden Travers (6-4, 285) and Errol Demontagnac (6-3, 290). Together, they address a clear need on the defensive line and give the Huskers three high-upside bodies who can compete for early playing time.
Nehemiah is ranked as a four-star prospect, a top 400 prospect, the No. 38 defensive lineman in his class, and the No. 1 overall player in Minnesota. During his junior season, he recorded 70 tackles, six tackles for loss, 1.5 sacks, and two forced fumbles, showing the disruptive interior presence that made him a priority target for Nebraska’s staff. He has great quickness and athleticism for his size and has proven he can handle double teams with ease. Ombati is the type of player Nebraska has been desperately trying to find since Ty Robinson left.
The addition continues a strong run for the Huskers’ 2027 class, further solidifying the defensive line’s future while also signaling that Rhule’s recruiting machine is in overdrive heading into the summer evaluation period.
