In a game that started slow and replicated the overcast skies today in Lincoln, the Huskers came up with another fourth quarter win. Northwestern with recent wins over a red hot UCLA and a talented Penn State team, falls today to the Huskers on a great bounce back win.
Nebraska does look rough around the edges, the offense doesn’t look as flashy as you we thought it may in early August but they are finding ways to win. With a day that calls didnt seem to favor the Huskers, at least the final score did. The offensive line only gave up one sack which is a huge improvement over the 9 sacks given up last week. With injuries, 2nd and 3rd stringers, the offensive line looked more comfortable today against Northwestern.
Emmett Johnson leads the Big 10 in rush yards and it shows in his play. Johnson is not a big back but runs with power, patience and elusiveness. For the 3rd week in a row, Johnson deserves the game ball. With constant runs it slowed the Northwestern pass rush today, also giving us the advantage in the pass game.
Dana Holgorsen changed up his play calling today calling for quick passes giving the offensive line a fighting chance. Short passes, misdirection plays and quick hitting screens seemed to just what the doctor ordered for the big red offense.
While there was nothing flashy, and it looked more like Iowa football than what we expected it to look like this year, it also had an Iowa like outcome with a close 4th quarter win. The Huskers bounced back from adversity as well as faced adversity during the game and still came out on top. Many things need cleaned up, especially giving up big runs and Nebraska’s new favorite past time which is leaving points on the field. But the Huskers got it done and are officially bowl eligible with everything they want to accomplish still in front of them.
