Upon his return home to Los Angeles in the Rose Bowl, true freshman quarterback TJ Lateef led Nebraska to a statement 28–21 win over UCLA in what felt more like a home game than a road test, with an estimated 75% of the crowd wearing Husker red.
Lateef was nearly flawless, completing his first eight passes and not recording an incompletion until the fourth quarter. His calm command of the offense paired perfectly with yet another outstanding performance from running back Emmett Johnson, who racked up nearly 250 all-purpose yards, gashing the Bruins on the ground and making key plays in the passing game.
Nebraska’s offense was unstoppable early, scoring touchdowns on every first-half drive and building a 21–7 halftime lead. UCLA quarterback Nico Iamaleava kept the Bruins alive with his legs, breaking off several big runs and leading a late touchdown drive to pull within a score with under five minutes remaining.
When it mattered most, the Huskers turned back to their workhorse. Johnson powered the final clock-draining drive, sealing the 28–21 victory and sending thousands of traveling Nebraska fans into celebration.
The defense had its struggles, particularly against Iamaleava’s rushing, but key moments including a Keona Davis sack and a missed UCLA field goal before halftime helped preserve the lead.
For a Nebraska team led by a true freshman quarterback, this was more than just a win. It was a glimpse of the program’s future built on efficiency, grit, and success proving that the Huskers will be just fine with Lateef at the helm.
