Jack McCallister, who transferred to the Cornhuskers just months ago, has entered the transfer portal. McCallister, a former Washington punter, who averaged 44 yards per punt, was the presumed starter going into this year. While the Huskers also had Kamdyn Koch on the roster, McCallister is more developed and proven, and was brought in to be the starter or at least compete for it.
McCallister re-entered the transfer portal on 16 April, shocking some fans. His time as a Husker was short lived. It’s not known where he will land.
On 17 April, Matt Rhule expressed his regret over McCallister leaving, but noted it was a decision made in the best interest of the team. The parting appears mutual. Rhule noted McCallister was recruited by then special teams coordinator Ed Foley, who has since been replaced by Coach Mike Ekeler. Ekeler wants to move to a more rugby style of punting, which apparently plays more to the strengths of Koch then McCallister.
Rhule noted McCallister is still practicing with the team and will be a great addition to wherever he lands.
For now, it appears Koch will be the starter going forward as they transition to Rugby style kicking.
