In the final game of the 2024-25 NFL season, we are left with a Super Bowl 57 rematch between the Kansas City Chiefs and the Philadelphia Eagles.
Lead by three time MVP and Super Bowl winning quarterback Patrick Mahomes, the Kansas City Chiefs are on the verge of being the first team in NFL history to win three consecutive Super Bowls.
With a 17-2 record, the Chiefs played in way more close games than you would think a team with a 17-2 record would play in.
The Chiefs are 12-0 in one score games this season, a crazy record considering how many last minute finishes the team was involved in.
The Eagles are lead in by the NFLs leading rusher (2,005 YDS) and 2025 Offensive Player of the Year Saquon Barkley, who is having a career season after leaving the rival New York Giants for Philadelphia this past offseason.
With a 17-3 record, the Eagles are playing in their third Super Bowl since 2018, beating the Tom Brady lead Patriots in 2018 and losing to the Chiefs in 2023.
Previewing Kansas City:
Lead by former Eagles coach Andy Reid, the Chiefs have been inconsistent at times offensively, which has led to a “down year” for Mahomes, who still ranks 7th in the NFL in passing yards and 9th in touchdowns.
The Chiefs brought back running back Kareem Hunt, who started his career with the franchise in 2017, after starter Isiah Pacheco missed 12 games due to a fractured right fibula.
Tight end Travis Kelce leads the team in receiving, catching 97 passes for 823 yards and 3 touchdowns. but it has been the big play ability from rookie wide receiver Xavier Worthy that makes this offense so dangerous.
Worthy has scored 9 total touchdowns this season (6 rec 3 rush) and has the big play ability to score every time in open space.
Defensively, coordinator Steve Spagnuolo has built the Chiefs into one of the leagues best defensives with multiple young pieces to utilize.
Nick Bolton (LB) George Karlaftis (EDGE) and Trent McDuffie (DB) are all key young players for the Chiefs that Spagnuolo loves on this defense, but they will be faced with a challenge defending the leagues 2nd best rushing offense.
Key Players:
RB- Kareem Hunt: 728 YDS 7 TD
WR- Deandre Hopkins: 56 REC 610 YDS 5 TD (traded from TENN to KC midseason)
DT- Chris Jones: 5 Sacks 1 FF
Previewing the Philadelphia Eagles:
Nick Sirianni leads the Eagles, coaching the team to a 37-19 record in his four years as head coach.
Not a single team has been able to stop Saquon Barkley this season, and a large part of that is due to quarterback Jalen Hurts ability to use his legs.
Hurts ran for 630 yards and 14 touchdowns in the regular season, adding on to the 2,903 passing yards and 18 touchdowns he threw through the air.
Despite low numbers in the passing game, wide receivers A.J. Brown and Devonta Smith provide the Eagles with one of the leagues best receiver duos.
Husker fans are familiar with starting center Cam Jurgens, the former Husker center leads one of the best offensive line units in the NFL, and that could be a big part of this game, as the Chiefs hold teams to less rushing yards per game (106.7 YPG) than Barkley’s (118 YPG) weekly average this season.
Defensively, Vic Fangio has reshaped his defense back to the top of the league, after ranking dead last in 2023 behind previous defensive coordinator Sean Desai.
Rookie defensive backs Cooper DeJean and Quinyon Mitchell have made big impacts in the secondary to pair with safety Reed Blankenship, who has made his known for the Eagles the past two seasons.
Key Players:
WR- A.J. Brown: 67 REC 1,079 YDS 7 TD
WR- Devonta Smith: 68 REC 833 YDS 8 TD
S- C.J. Gardner-Johnson: 6 INT 12 PD 1 FF
Prediction:
Between the explosive, yet almost one dimensional Eagles offense and superstar quarterback Patrick Mahomes, Sundays Super Bowl once again has potential to be an all-time classic, and I think a lot of that has to due with what is at stake in this game.
Most of the people that you will speak to about this game is riding with the Eagles, in hopes of what would be “the publics upset” over the Chiefs, but as all NFL fans know, that doesn’t historically end well when Mahomes is playing on the other side.
Mahomes is trending towards Brady status, and a three-peat would certainly make at least a case for him to be considered one of the greatest quarterbacks in NFL history.
