USC Postgame Press Conference
This now makes 4 straight losses in a row for the Nebraska Cornhusker Football team giving them only two more chances to reach bowl eligibility for the first time since 2016. The story of the game seemed to play out very predictably for most Husker fans, Nebraska had opportunities to win but was unable to capitalize, the Ref’s had some more than questionable missed calls (Pass interference), and the ball just seemed to bounce USC’s way today.
After the game Head Coach Matt Rhule held his usual postgame press conference, here are some of the highlights of what he had to say:
– Rhule opened up the conference by stating his disappointment for not winning the game and finding ourselves yet again just one play away from winning
– The team laid it on the line
– Two big plays that went through our defenders hands were critical to the outcome of the game
– He credited Dana Holgorsen for being able to come in when he did and call plays today
– Special teams played well today, with a blocked field goal, and a couple of made field goals
– On the timeout in the 4th quarter before Nebraska punted “We were going to fake it if they sent out their punt return team”. “I felt like we should go for it if they gave us a look we liked”, “We didn’t want to have to throw another go route”. Rhule mentioned that had it been 4th and 1 or 2 they would have gone for it.
– USC threw in a speed option play against the Huskers and Rhule did not expect to be seeing that today against USC
– The staff new the USC QB would be a red zone threat with his legs
– Rhule thinks what dana has done so far is amazing, emphasizing the verbage and the timing of subbing. Noting that guys who haven’t got the ball much this year contributed such as Janiron Bonner
– The Nebraska offense faced a lot of man coverage and was not able to get open. Rhule noted that they continue to find new ways to get open against man coverage
– The more Nebraska continues to develop under Dana Holgorsen the more competitive they will be
– One of the biggest things that Holgorsen noticed when he arrived was that the QB needed to get rid of the ball better
– Rhule said the Huskers have a lot more work to do, which is unfortunate to say with two games left
– Ceyair Wright has been a great addition for Nebraska both on and off field, and Rhule is happy for him
– The team “Worked their tails off the last two weeks”, “there is nothing worse than practicing well and not winning”
– Rhule ended the press conference by saying there is a lot to build upon from today
Nebraska will be back in action next week at Memorial Stadium against Wisconsin, a team we haven’t been able to beat since 2012. Perhaps Nebraska can finally break through as a team and pull off that ever elusive 6th win and bowl eligibility.
