College football Twitter is melting down over the possible expansion to a 24-team playoff — and most of the anger is pointed in the completely wrong direction. In this video I’m breaking down why I’m not upset about going to 24 teams, why the “regular season won’t matter” argument is total nonsense, and where your frustration should actually be directed.

The Iron Bowl has mattered since 1893. Nebraska-Iowa has mattered through every era of this sport. A 24-team playoff isn’t changing that. What actually should bother you is the cancellation of marquee non-conference games and a selection committee that’s still just a bunch of people in a room picking teams by hand.

We’ve also got some context that almost nobody talks about — college football already runs a 40-team playoff in the lower divisions. This has all been figured out. Nobody is inventing interstellar flight here.

I also get into why the NCAA deserves most of the blame for where college football finds itself today, why universities need athletics to generate more revenue than ever, and why the shift toward a more NFL-style fandom model is probably just the new reality — not the end of the world.
