In this video, I break down exactly what happened: how the CSC reviewed Nebraska’s Playfly Sports restructuring deal, why it was rejected on two grounds, what the arbitration ruling actually means (and doesn’t mean), and what comes next — including a federal hearing on May 27th that could fundamentally change the legal landscape for every program in the country.
More importantly, I try to explain why Nebraska made these moves in the first place. Troy Dannen laid it out plainly in 2024: Ohio State has a $23 million NIL budget. Nebraska’s collective had under $10 million. You can’t close that gap by asking the same loyal fanbase to donate more. Nebraska graduates roughly half the students Ohio State does every year. The ceiling on the donor model is real — and Nebraska is closer to it than anyone else in the Big Ten.
So Nebraska made a harder call: shut down the 1890 Initiative, bring everything in-house, and build a revenue model around the one asset no other Big Ten school can replicate — the fact that the University of Nebraska is the only major media property in the state.
Is it a master plan? Partly. Are there real costs and real risks? Absolutely. That’s what this video is about.
