Husker legacy quarterback and younger brother of Dylan Raiola, Dayton Raiola has decommitted from Nebraska this week. This act has led to much speculation about the Raiola family including Dylan and their involvement with the program moving forward. I think this decision lends itself to nothing more than Occam’s razor, the most likely explanation is often the right one. Dayton Raiola watched TJ Lateef perform.
Dayton is often looked at as the other Raiola brother due to Dylan’s immense talent. This is a position I’m sure that has already weighed heavy on Dayton in possibly wanting to forge his own path. Then with the Huskers continuing to recruit the nations top talent at quarterback including class of 2027 borderline 5 star recruit Trae Taylor Raiola the younger made a business decision to open his recruiting back up. I am assuming this was not a decision made out of haste, yet something that has been a topic since the signing of Lateef and now Taylor.
This decision likely has nothing to do with Dylan at all, yet the opposite, I believe that Dylan is all in. Nothing about Lateef’s play no matter how good it was brings him to the same caliber of quarterback yet that Dylan is. Dylan is still the best quarterback on the roster and will start next year as long as he is healthy. It does however give him some room to leverage the university into getting some offensive linemen that can have an immediate impact, to protect him.
The Raiola story is an overreaction by the media in Nebraska to a decommit from a talented quarterback who was likely to not see valuable playing time in his career. Dayton is making a good decision for himself and for his future by giving himself the opportunity to be put into a position in which he can succeed. Let’s take a look at the QB room in 2027 for instance which would be Dayton’s sophomore year. You have Lateef starting, Trae Taylor as a true freshman backing him up and Dayton Raiola as a third string QB who would likely not see the field. Dayton Raiola is too good to start his career as a third string quarterback without a gap from his freshman year till his graduation that would lead him to become a starter.
There are two possibilities, one that is less likely is that there is a coaching change that has already been decided and will directly affect the Raiola’s and it is reflected in Dayton’s choice. The other and most likely option is that this young kid who is a top 100 QB in the nation wants to better his chances of playing by landing on a team with a less stacked QB room. This decision is not a negative impact on the Huskers or their future, yet a smart decision by a talented QB who understands the benefits of playing time.
