Malachi Coleman’s Absence in the Victory Over UTEP
It didn’t go unnoticed that sophomore receiver Malachi Coleman was absent from the field during Nebraska’s recent victory over UTEP. Even later into the fourth quarter, when everyone on the roster seemed to be getting into the game, Coleman was absent. On Monday, head coach Matt Rhule revealed that Coleman is currently battling a groin injury, which can be notoriously tricky to overcome due to their tendency to linger. Groin injuries can be particularly challenging for athletes because they often take longer to heal and can easily be aggravated if not properly managed. Participation in rigorous activities too soon can lead to re-injury, which is why it’s crucial to handle this recovery process with care. Coach Rhule has indicated that Coleman will likely redshirt this season, a move that makes sense for both the player and the team.
A Deep Receiver Room
The decision to redshirt Coleman is made easier by the depth of Nebraska’s receiver room. Seniors transfers Isaiah Neyor and Jamal Banks provide strong, experienced options for the team. Both appear that they could be NFL level talents. Allowing Coleman to take a year to fully heal and develop will potentially make him a dangerous weapon next season. During his freshman season in 2023, he did not get the luxury due to so many injuries on the team to redshirt and develop. Pairing a healthy Coleman with teammates like Lloyd and Barney Jr. could make for a truly talented lineup in 2025.
Patience: The Key to Future Success
As much as it might be frustrating for Coleman to sit out, patience could very well pay off in the long run. The transfer portal looms as an option for many athletes, but Coleman appears to have a high character and a strong love for Nebraska, making it unlikely he’d transfer. Taking a redshirt year allows him to focus on his health and skills, positioning him to make a significant impact on the team when he returns. At the end of the day, it’s what is best for Coleman and the Huskers.
